Who is at Risk for Dementia?

Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability. It can be caused by a variety of conditions, but most commonly occurs as people age. Dementia affects memory, thinking, and judgment. Dementia is not a normal part of aging. However, the risk for developing dementia increases as people get older. About 5% of people over the age of 65 have dementia. This number increases to 20% of people over the age of 85.
